Always be kind, respect individual differences, people have real lives outside of work
Follow your own core set of ethics always
Get to know your team deeply, ask great questions, love them for who they are as people
You work for your team, they dont work for you
Grow your team members through regular and thoughtful recognition, upgrade their salary, help them find their next position preferably inside or outside your company if necessary
Allow your team to lead you, let them tell you what they want or need or what they can do for you and each other, and support them all the way
Culture at work
Know when to quit, if culture is toxic you wont be able to change it
Similarly, if your manager is narcissistic, distracted during your 1 on 1 time, wont fight for you and shows no sign of leaving, quit
Most companies have a chief legal officer or general counsel whose fiduciary obligation is to hear whistleblower complaints without fear of retaliation. If you can, talk to you CHRO or HR representative initially, but dont be misled by your code of conduct policy – this is not reserved ONLY for age, race and gender discrimination and sexual harassment.
Healthy mind and body
Walk everyday and don’t sit for longer than 1 hour without getting up and moving
Find your tribe who you can rely on when things get tough
Drink 1 glass of red wine every day
Eat until you are 80% full
Eat a majority of vegetables with not more than 20% meat
Slow down, eat together whenever possible
Learn to enjoy the crazy, curious brains of young, growing children
Find your purpose
Define what your life should feel like 3-5 years from now and find work that helps you get there, do not adapt your lifestyle to fit your job
